BMW X5 45e (plug-in electric hybrid) towing test.
Electric is great for towing but in reality there are not many EVs capable of towing over 2000kg and even with lighter loads the real world range can be halved when towing due to the extra weight and drag plus most chargers in the UK would require a trailer to be unhitched so that you can park in a charging bay.
Basically if towing heavy loads, a diesel SauV or pickup truck is still the favoured choice. But what about a plug-in hybrid..??
Electric only when doing the usual school run and commuting to work but with a 3.0 twin turbo petrol engine as in this BMW C5 45e to backup the range when covering longer distances…?
How efficient will it be? How far can it go on electric? Does the blend of electric and petrol work well? Is it better than diesel?
Well I’ve towed with many cars including Land Rover Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6 and 4 3.0 SDV6 (my favourite), Toyota Landcruiser, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200 and Volkswagen Amarok so let me test this and give you some comparisons!
Is the X5 a jack of all and master of none?
Thanks for watching.

After just 46,000 miles and 4 1/2 years of ownership, last week Tesla service advised me against driving my car as the HV battery was about to fail. It is now at the service centre awaiting a replacement HV battery. Tesla provided a Loaner car (awful experience due to arguments/charges over existing damage). But my main concern is the potential poor standard of the replacement refurb battery, the lack of extended warrantee (it will still be based on my car's age and total mileage) and the potential cost of a future out of warrantee replacement if it fails again. Tesla say it would cost just under GBP £20,000 ($25,000). More than the value of the car which, by the way, is dropping like a stone! I am now questioning the value of EVs. The batteries are clearly unreliable and expensive to replace. When the HV battery fails, the warrantee does NOT cover a new replacement battery. Apparently, the chance of receiving an unreliable replacement battery under warrantee is high because they are refurbished from a previously failed battery. Therefore the seemingly generous 120k mile warrantee may not be that helpful. Now that my head is full of all these concerns, I may not buy another Tesla. I have been very careful with my charging habits since owning my car from new and diligently followed the 80/20 rule charging mostly at home. Currently, I am concerned my car will become a worthless risk as soon as the warrantee period is up in 2027, just 3 1/2 years from now. I wish I knew of these options you mention for extending battery warrantee or garages that have the ability to repair batteries.

We have an id3 and Tesla model 3 LR, so I have 2 years of comparison. Number one recommendation for any VW owner: get yourself an OBD Eleven dongle (specific brand of OBD2/OBDII device) and use it to turn off lane keep assist. The VW system is actively dangerous - and is common to all their cars, not just the EVs. The A pillar design is deeply flawed - it restricts vision significantly at junctions, roundabouts and bendy roads The handling is heavily compromised. It's comfortable on decent roads, but the body control is poor: roads I comfortably drive at 60mph in the Tesla are 45mph on the VW. Side to side control isn't great either - you get a lot of head wobble. I find it much more difficult to steer a chosen line through a given corner than in the Tesla (or the Skoda estate I had previously). In my view it's nowhere near a Golf for handing. I miss one pedal driving and if you use the adaptive cruise it stops with a jolt. Cabin material quality is subjective, but I and all my passengers think it's way down on the Tesla Not having space for a charging cable under the bonnet is stupid - it would fit and it means if the boot is full, you have to empty it to get the cable out and you have to put a wet dirty cable in the boot when it's raining Things I do like: It's quiet The hatchback is much more practical than the (bigger) Tesla boot It's comfortable on good roads Rear seat space Wipers are good Efficiency is pretty good - at the minute I'm easily getting over 4 miles/kWh (although suffers a bit more in cold weather) Basic headlights are good - although Tesla has caught up now that it has the matrix headlights enabled Availablity of Android Auto is miles better than Tesla navigation At list price, I'd say you'd be mad to buy the VW. Ours is almost exactly half the monthly price on a salary sacrifice scheme and at that price it's fine. It was the cheapest car on the scheme at the time and it's ok on that basis. When I replace it I'll either go for whatever's cheapest in my employer's scheme or a second hand Model 3.

I had a Skoda for two months, infotainment was crap. But on the steering wheel it had a little wheel (for lack of a better word) for volume up down and could click it to pause, worked well. Has the cupra got the same? A pause button, skip button , volume controls and a max blower button must be easy to find/press. What’s it got?

I own a 2022 RWD Model 3. The Tesla RWD LFP Model 3 is the most efficient EV made, which is highly impressive considering it is a little rocket ship. It's comfortable and quiet except over rough roads, which is true for most cars in this price range. You would have to go up to six-figure EVs to get better suspension. That being said, the ride of this car is very good, even over rough roads. It's an excellent car. Three things that could be improved: 1. it would be nice to have about 50 miles more range. The 2024 Model 3 does have more range. 2. In Arizona, the heat pump has to constantly cool the battery to protect it, even when the car is parked (especially when it is parked in the sun). This costs you about 40% of your range in 90-100 degree F weather. However, the fact that the Tesla cools the battery to protect its longevity is excellent. I will gladly give up some range to extend the useful battery life. I do with the batteries were more heat resistant. Perhaps with the advent of solid-state batteries, that will materialize. 3. It would be very much appreciated if the car blocked out more road noise. The new 2024 Model 3s are much quieter on the road. However, this 2022 Model 3 is pretty quiet most of the time on the road. It only gets noisy when the road is very rough. When the weather is cool (I live in AZ) I get about the same range exactly that you got, and I have 19" wheels. It will realistically go approximately 240-250 miles with mixed driving if you don't push the speed and drive it reasonably. That's exceptional for a two-year-old electric car. Typically, if you precondition the battery, you can get up to 150 KW per hour charging. But it drops down quickly as you approach 50% and keeps dropping. You can charge from 30% - 80% in about 20 minutes on a Tesla supercharger, which is very fast. It does take a long time for it charge that last 20%.

I think, in order for EVs to be capable of towing heavy loads, they need gearboxes and drive through charging hubs. With a "tow gear" the cars would have even more torque at a low speed and you can make them mechanically limited at let's say 70mph instead of 100 or 125mph as most EVs currently do. That allows for higher peak torque at the wheels. Regen would also work better because it can regen with maximum power at a lower speed. It does increase complexity but you can even do it without a clutch, the gear is selected automatically by the car when it notices that a certain load is attached to it, let's say above 750kgs and then before taking off it shifts into that gear and stays there while the weight is attached. Like this X5 does, it's electric motor is attached to the gearbox which aids in taking off. It's the ideal solution IMO.

I don't see the point of hybrids, if it's in petrol mode, it's carrying a battery doing nothing, in electric mode, carrying a petrol engine doing nothing, for the price of a hybrid you could get a decent pure electric, plus a cheap petrol for when you need it

Every powertrain has pros and cons. May not fit your use case but I’m sure it will be better than pure EV or ICE in specific scenarios. There is no perfect solution. You have to choose what works best for you.

I think you may need to research PHEV's a bit. It doesn't sound like you understand how they work.

    • @karlwest437
      @karlwest437 День тому

@@opticzar "Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) use batteries to power an electric motor and another fuel, such as gasoline, to power an internal combustion engine (ICE). PHEV batteries can be charged using a wall outlet or charging equipment, by the ICE, or through regenerative braking. The vehicle typically runs on electric power until the battery is nearly depleted, and then the car automatically switches over to use the ICE." Now I know they don't all work exactly the same way, but this is how a typical hybrid works, according to a quick Google search, sure some of them charge the battery using the ICE and that makes them a bit more efficient, the point is that, hybrids are two systems jammed together and you get all the complexity and maintenance required for both, and a lot of the time you're carrying extra weight that's doing nothing but wasting energy

By coincidence, yesterday I had a ride in a Model 3 being used by a ride-share service. I do not know what specific version of the Model 3 it might have been. ( It looked new but maybe the driver just keeps it clean.) Anyway, I was distinctly uncomfortable in the rear seat. The seat is low, so my knees stuck up in the air. There was not enough room under the front seat for me to get my toes under it, which added to the awkward seating position. The ride was distinctly harsh as well. I had ridden in Model 3s two or three times when they first came out several years ago, but this was my first ride in one for several years. Riding as a rear seat passenger was a vivid reminder of how far Tesla has to go to achieve good rear seat passenger comfort. Now full disclosure, I do not know what the tires or wheel size were, so maybe it was a performance model or had larger wheels, do not know. And I am not anti-Tesla -- I owned a Model S for 8 years and enjoyed it. On the positive side, I did like the view of the center screen -- my current EV has much smaller screens, and I miss tesla's big screen, especially for using maps.

There's only one vehicle sold in the USA - Chevrolet Silverado EV with 220 kW battery which kills the towing with 200 miles range while towing but requires really serious DC charging 365 kW. It tows 11000 pounds. Nothing else, including Tesla Cybertruck or Ford F150 Lightning makes good range while towing. Rivian is somewhere next to Silverado while towing but much far behind. Serious towing needs a heavy duty pickup with serious Diesel engine. Most of those in the USA have close to 7 liter displacement Disel V8 engine which is ridiculous for the UK or continental Europe.

Here we are a year later and you can get an I6 here in the states for a song with two years of free fast charging. Like it or not, it's more affordable than the other two.

Comparing this 2 is like android and iphone, ppl will get a testla just because everyone's getting 1 and it's not really that better or different.
